Yet it is not immediately clear to many people what the U-value exactly means. The short explanation: the U-value indicates how much heat is lost through the glass. The lower the U-value, the better the glass insulates.

What is the U-value?

The U-value indicates how much heat is lost by a material. Glass therefore involves heat loss through the window. A low U-value means that little heat escapes outside. A high U-value means that a lot of heat is lost.

The U-value is expressed in W/m²K — watts per square meter per degree temperature difference. You don't have to remember that formula exactly. In practice, only one rule of thumb counts.

Low U-value = better insulation. The lower the number, the less heat is lost through the glass.

Why is the U-value important for glass?

Windows are often one of the weaker points in the insulation of a home. Even if the walls and roof are well insulated, poor glass can lose a lot of heat. The U-value helps to compare glass types fairly. With it you can see:

  • how well the glass insulates;
  • approximately how much heat is lost;
  • whether glass is suitable for sustainability;
  • whether glass possibly meets subsidy conditions;
  • which glass suits your comfort needs;
  • whether HR++ glass, triple glass or vacuum glass makes more sense.

Which U-value does which glass have?

Single glazing

Single glazing has a high U-value and is a poor insulator. It consists of one pane of glass, allowing heat to escape easily. You often notice this in cold windows, a feeling of draught, condensation on the inside, a high heat demand, cold drafts through large windows and little comfort in winter. Replacing single glass with insulating glass therefore often makes a big difference.

(Old) double glazing

Old double glazing is better than single glazing, but insulates much less well than modern HR++ glass. Ordinary double glazing consists of two panes of glass with air between them. The cavity helps, but without a modern coating and gas filling the insulation value remains limited. Old double glazing often still feels cold, especially with large windows or low outside temperatures. If the glass is also leaking, the operation is even worse — condensation between the glass plates is a clear signal that replacement is advisable.

HR++ glass

HR++ glass usually has a U-value of approximately 1.0 to 1.2 W/m²K, depending on the exact construction. It consists of two glass plates with an insulating cavity, usually filled with argon gas, plus a heat-reflecting coating. This makes HR++ glass much better than single glazing and old double glazing. HR++ glass is popular because it:

  • insulates well;

  • is more affordable than triple glass or vacuum glass;
  • suitable for many renovations;
  • can often qualify for a subsidy.

Triple glass

Triple glass usually has a lower U-value than HR++ glass. It consists of three glass plates and two insulating cavities, so less heat is lost. Triple glazing is often chosen for new window frames, new construction, very well insulated homes, complete renovations, homes with high energy requirements and large glass areas. Vacuum glass

Vacuum glass usually has a very low U-value, while it is much thinner than HR++ glass or triple glass. This is due to the vacuum space between the glass plates: because there is almost no air in it, heat can be transferred less easily. Vacuum glass is especially interesting for old window frames, narrow rebates, monumental homes, renovations, situations where HR++ glass is too thick and the preservation of the existing appearance. What does the Ug value mean?

With glass you often see the term Ug value. This is similar to the U-value, but is more specific: the Ug-value is the U-value of the glass itself. The letter "g" stands for glass. So only the glass is assessed, not the entire window including frame. This is important, because a window consists of more than just glass: the frame, the spacer and the mounting also influence the total insulation.

What is the difference between Ug, Uf and Uw?

When it comes to windows you sometimes come across three terms.

Your-value Insulation value of the complete window (window)

The Ug value therefore only concerns the glass, the Uf value concerns the frame, and the Uw value concerns the complete window: glass + frame + spacer + mounting. When ordering glass you usually look at the Ug value. The Your value is more important for the overall performance of a window.

Ug ​​≠ Uw. The Ug value says something about the glass alone; the Uw value over the entire window. Don't confuse them when comparing quotes.

Why is the frame also important?

Good glass in a bad frame yields less than you might expect, because heat can also be lost through the frame. A few examples:

  • Triple glazing in a poorly insulated old aluminum frame works less well.
  • HR++ glass in a good wooden frame can actually be an excellent improvement.
  • Vacuum glass in old wood can be interesting if the frame must be preserved.

So don't just look at the U-value of the glass. Also check the condition of the frame, the gap seal, the glazing beads, the rubbers, the sealant seams, the ventilation and the installation quality. A window is only as good as the combination of glass, frame and installation.

Does a lower U-value always make sense?

Not always. A lower U-value means better insulation, but that is not automatically the smartest choice. For example, triple glazing insulates better than HR++ glass, but is also thicker, heavier and more expensive — and often does not fit well in existing window frames. That is why you look at the balance between insulation gain, price, frame space, weight, installation, subsidy, home insulation and ventilation.

  • For a standard renovation, HR++ glass is often sufficient.
  • Triple glazing can be interesting for new window frames.
  • Vacuum glass often makes more sense for narrow old frames.

U-value and living comfort

A lower U-value usually provides more living comfort. The inner glass plate remains warmer, so you feel less cold. You notice this especially with large windows, windows next to the sofa, bedrooms, workplaces near the window, glass fronts and older homes. With better insulating glass, the room feels more evenly warm and you don't have to use as much heat to sit comfortably.

U-value and condensation

The U-value also affects condensation. With poorly insulating glass, the inside of the window becomes colder, causing moisture from the indoor air to settle more quickly on the glass. Better insulating glass can reduce condensation on the inside. But beware: condensation is not only determined by the glass — ventilation and humidity also play a major role.

  • Condensation on the inside often indicates too much moisture in the house, too little ventilation, cold surfaces or insufficient heating.
  • Condensation on the outside of well-insulating glass is usually not a problem — it can actually mean that the glass is working properly.
  • Condensation between the glass plates usually means that the insulating glass is leaking.

U-value and glass thickness

A thicker glass package is not automatically better. The insulation value depends on the total construction: the number of glass plates, the width of the cavity, the gas filling, the coating, the spacer, the vacuum space, the glass thickness and the edge seal. For example, thin vacuum glass can insulate better than thicker standard double glazing. And triple glass is thicker than HR++ glass, but therefore does not always fit in existing window frames.   1. Thinking that only the glass counts — the frame, mounting and gap seals are also important.
  2. Confusing Ug value and Uw value — Ug is about the glass, Uw about the entire window.
  3. Only choose the lowest U-value — the best insulating glass is not always the best choice for existing window frames.
  4. Confuse glass thickness with insulation value — thicker glass is not automatically better; the structure determines the performance.

  6. Forget ventilation — better insulating glass makes your home more dense; ventilation remains necessary.
