Matte glass and laminated glass with a matte film look almost the same from a distance: both milky, both privacy. Yet they are two very different products — and that difference determines whether your glass only blocks views, or is also safe and sound-resistant. Below we explain it clearly, so that you do not order the wrong glass.
What is frosted glass (etched or sandblasted)?
Frosted glass is single glass with one surface treated — etched (with acid) or sandblasted. This makes the glass translucent: light comes through, but you cannot see through it. It's the classic, affordable choice for privacy.
- Provides privacy while allowing daylight through.
- One pane of glass — no added security or sound insulation.
- Can be cut to size, drilled and finished with ground edges.
Commonly used for custom frosted glass in bathroom windows, front doors and sidelights, glass table tops and partitions.
What is laminated glass with a matte film?
Laminated glass consists of two panes of glass laminated together with a tough plastic film (PVB) in between. In a matte variant, the intermediate foil is white/opal, so that the glass also provides privacy. The big difference is in what else the foil does:
- Safety: If the glass breaks, the shards remain stuck to the foil - the glass remains in place as a whole (fall-proof, burglar-resistant).
- Sound insulation: the foil dampens sound better than single glazing.
- Structurally a thicker, heavier and more expensive product than frosted single glazing.

Which one do you choose?
- Only privacy needed (bathroom window, interior door, table top, partition wall) → frosted glass. It does exactly what you want, at the best price.
- Also safety or sound insulation required (glass in or next to a door, a balustrade, noise-affected room) → laminated glass with matt foil. Here, frosted single glazing is not sufficient.
Common confusion
Because both look matte, people sometimes think that matte glass is also "safety glass." That is not the case: matte (etched) single glazing does not offer any extra safety. If you need glass that must meet a safety standard (for example for doors or fall hazard, NEN 3569), then consciously choose laminated glass. Do you have doubts about your situation?
